Swordfish Charter in Key Largo: The Long Daytime Trip

Most people do not want a ten-hour trip, which is why the ten-hour is not sprinkled across the rest of the menu. This is the hard, physical, adult day on the boat. A swordfish is not guaranteed. Why the day is this long

The run is the reason. The offshore trip for sailfish, mahi, wahoo, and blackfin is four, six, or eight hours, and it is still a serious day. It is the better booking for almost everyone who calls and says “big fish” without meaning a swordfish specifically. Sailfish are his first offshore priority. Mahi are second. A sword is a different animal and a different commitment.

The start is early. A day this long does not leave the dock at noon. The captain sets the time when you book. Weather can move it or cancel it. On a trip that burns the whole day offshore, the morning call is not a courtesy. It is the difference between fishing and taking a beating for nothing.

What he means by gladiator

The nickname is his, and it is not decoration. Swordfish are the fish he separated from the rest of the offshore menu because the day is harder. Heavy tackle. A long run. Hours of waiting that do not look like the busy snapper bite people expect from a Key Largo postcard. He has described the trip as high risk and high reward, and as one that can be very disappointing. That disappointment is part of the product. Write it into your plans before you write a check. If a blank day would ruin the vacation, book a reef trip, catch some snapper or catch none, and be back for lunch.

Who it is for

Adults. People who have fished offshore before and already know they do not get seasick, or who have a plan for the fact that they do. Take something before you leave the dock if there is any question. The water on a swordfish day is not the patch reef. You will feel the ride for a lot of hours, including hours when nothing is happening, which is when people discover they should have stayed in.

Six people is the maximum, and six people who all want to fight a swordfish is usually too many opinions on one rod. The boat is private either way. A couple, or three friends who have agreed in advance who is in the chair, is a more sensible group than a full boat of first-timers. Bring a full day of food and drinks. The boat is not a restaurant, and you will not be back at the marina for a late breakfast. Layers, a hat, sunscreen, polarized glasses, non-slip shoes, and a rain shell. The day is long enough for the weather to change while you are out.

Kids, brand-new anglers, and anyone who needs to be back at a condo by early afternoon should book the intro trip instead. Two to four hours, calm water, two to three miles, someone baiting the hooks. That is a good trip. It is not a junior version of this one. The wreck trip, six to ten miles and home in four to eight hours, is the step between them. The season page will not show you a swordfish month, because he has not given this fish a season the way he has given sailfish November through April and mahi spring through fall. Availability is the hours and the weather, not a migration this page can chart.

What you should book instead

Book something else if any of these are true.

You are here in a month when you really wanted mahi or sailfish. Those fish have seasons and distances of their own. A swordfish booking does not get you a kite in the morning and a sword in the afternoon as a standard day. The ten-hour can include the long troll that the ride already is. It is still a swordfish trip.

You wanted deep-drop tilefish. He does not sell that. The grounds are ruined, in his account, and you can hardly catch anything. Swordfish is not the substitute product for a tilefish search.

You wanted a sandbar, a sunset, or a quiet memorial. Those are short, nearshore, and not this.

Plan the day

Private boat, six people, whole boat. Eight hours or ten, and most people should think hard before they pick ten. No swordfish is guaranteed, and no depth is advertised.
